Friends and neighbours ...

Friends and neighbours ... how blessed I am to have them both and without them these last couple of days would have been very difficult.  Its been rather an exciting and nail biting time, so if your sitting comfortably I will tell you a story to explain why the promised pictures of what is getting made at the Suzie Sews household are just not appearing... So it was the end of a busy day, the usual goings on here, school run, school assembly, swimming, lunch, housework, coffee with friends, school run, play dates then making supper for my family... As we all pottered around the kitchen I noticed a haze in the hall way, I went and opened the door to the smallest room in the house, I was greeted  with a huge plume of smoke which overwhelmed me! I shouted the boys to come quick and we did our little fire escape route and met up on the front lawn.  I rushed over to my 'more than capable neighbour' and in true Knight in Shining armour he rushed over and investigated the situation for us.  Our Fuse box had gone up in smoke.

So with the smoke under control and the electrics turned off it was a case of sorting things out.  This is when the fun begins and if anyone could have seen the behaviour that followed they would have wondered what was going on.  Two sets of neighbours helped me unload my just stocked up fridge and freezer (having spent two afternoons last week cooking to stock up the freezer for meals to take away with us over the coming weeks) So in and out of each others homes we went as we distributed the food in to all available spaces.  Next overnight bags got packed and then it was a choice of who to stay with as everyone was so willing to help and put us up.  Then the boys and I eat our supper on the front lawn in the failing light with the neighbours children joining in and us Moms chatting, it looked liked a scene from the Clampits!!!
The emergency people came and did what could be done and then we spent the last couple of days having it all sorted including new plastering.

So No crafting has been done, the electric is now back on and tonight we will all be in our own beds. I have made the best of the situation, including defrosting my freezer, cleaning, sorting my insurance...etc.  I just need to get all my food back...now who had the lamb chops?  SO with decorating plans in my head and most of the house back to normal except for a faint smell of melted plastic all is OK as if nothing had happened. I did lie awake the first night and run through the scenario of if we had gone up in smoke three hours later and we were all in bed... I just do not want to go there...

So forgive me my absence and the rather of topic chat.  Normal Suzie Sews blogging will resume soon...

How lucky we are when our neighbours are also our friends.  Thanks you guys you are all stars!!!

Blimey Suzie, I'm glad you are all ok....quite an adventure for the boys, and brilliant having just wonderful neighbours.

I think I might just go out and buy some more smoke alarms! I'd never have considered putting them in the smallest room, but perhaps we should.

Take care

Kim

Oh Suzie - someone was smiling on you - thank heavens it wasn't when you were all asleep, and doubly thank heavens for such wonderful neighbours (hope you find the lamb chops though tee hee!)

Mmmmm - mental note, consider fitting an extra smoke detector in the downstairs loo where the fuse box is

What goes around comes around ... I'm sure you have been kind to all those who helped you. If it happened to them, you'd have done just as they did for you and the boys.

Do you have a smoke alarm? If not ... perhaps time to get one?!

Oh my goodness.

Lucky you are all ok.

When Jack was a baby I had turned the oven onwhile he was napping then I went to the basement for something. I came upstairs to find the entire house FILLED with horrible, acrid smoke, so thick I could hardly get to the baby. That was really a scary thing.

Oh my goodness what a nasty fright. Glad you are ok though and that you find the lamb chops!! We do have smoke alarms but not in the lobby where our fuse box is, so we'll be buying one tomorrow as its the one place I never thought of putting one. Jane x

Thank goodness you're all OK. House fires are very very scary - I keep meaning to buy escape ladders for our bedrooms. This has prompted me to actually do it.
